University of Georgia School of Law LLM Program

The University of Georgia, School of Law offers one LLM program designed for foreign students who are looking to study the United States legal system.

The LLM program at the University of Georgia, School of Law is a full time program available exclusively to attorneys who received their legal education outside of the United States. It is a 24 credit hour program that begins in August and is completed in May of the following year. Prior to the beginning of the degree program, there is a mandatory University of Georgia School of Law LLM orientation program in August, and students can also choose to attend an optional one-week International Student Life orientation in the summer. Students are able to create a completely personalized course of study by selecting from Georgia Law’s extensive JD class schedule. All students are only required to take three specific courses during their studies:

  • Legal Research and Writing for LLM Students
  • Constitutional Law I or Civil Procedure
  • Law and the Ethics of Lawyering

Students enrolled in the University of Georgia, School of Law are allowed to select from two study tracks, the All Course Track and the Essay Track.

University of Georgia School of Law LLM Program – All Course Track

Students enrolled in the All Course Track must complete a minimum of 24 units with a B- average. After completing the three required courses students have an additional 15 units to select courses that complement their personal areas of interest.

University of Georgia School of Law LLM Program – Essay Track

Students enrolled in the Essay Track must also complete a minimum of 24 units with a B- average but they are also required to write a 60 – 90 page paper which is supervised by the student’s faculty member. Students have an additional 9 units to select courses that complement their research paper and general areas of interest.

University of Georgia School of Law LLM Admission

Like many LLM programs, The University of Georgia, School of Law only accepts applications via the Law School Admissions Counsel (LSAC) application assembly service. Check the school website for updated general and priority application deadlines. Students must prove English language proficiency in order to be considered for admission to the LLM program. English language proficiency can be proven by TOEFL score of 100 on the internet test or 600 on the computer based test or 250 on the paper test. Students may also submit an IELTS score of 7.0 or better.

A completed application will include:

  • Online Application submitted through LSAC
  • $100 Application fee
  • Official Transcripts and proof of degree
  • Proof of English proficiency (TOEFL or IELTS score report)
  • Personal statement about 500 words long with indication of the track the student intends to follow
  • Program of Study Form
  • Financial Assistance Request Form
  • 2 Letters of Recommendation

 

University of Georgia School of Law LLM Tuition

As you may or may not know, the University of Georgia, School of Law is actually part of a public university and as a result offers lower tuition than many private programs and also offers “in-state” and “out-of-state” tuition options depending on the student’s residency. For most international students, out-of-state tuition would be appropriate. Take a look at the school website for updated University of Georgia law tuition and fees. Health insurance, books and living expenses add to the total cost of attendance.

University of Georgia School of Law LLM Scholarships

The University of Georgia School of Law does not provide scholarships to LLM students, and encourages students to seek out financial assistance from their home countries or outside organizations. However, the University does offer out-of-state tuition waivers and student assistantships to exceptional candidates on the basis of merit and financial need. The University of Georgia School of Law has an Office of Career Services which offers LLM students counseling, critique of resumes and cover letters, job boards, online postings, and search strategies, faxing and postage for mailings, on- and off-campus interviews, and a remote interview room for phone or Skype interviews.
