United Kingdom LLM Resources

This page is a resource for British lawyers who would like to attend a U.S. LLM program.

Obtaining a U.S. Visa for British Students

Lawyers in the United Kingdom who want to attend law school in the United States in order to earn an LLM in U.S. Law are required to have an F-1 student visa. Prior to applying for a visa, prospective students should apply for a U.S. law school and obtain a Certificate of F-1 Eligibility, referred to officially as form I-20A-B. U.S. schools that have been approved to enroll foreign students are authorized to issue this form.

Upon receipt of form 1-20A-B, the following five visa application steps must be completed:

  1. Applicants who have special circumstances that could make them ineligible for a visa must submit documentation in support of their application. These special circumstances may include arrests or convictions, medical issues or previous U.S. deportation.

  2. A visa interview must be scheduled at the U.S. Embassy in London or the U.S. Consulate General in Belfast. The Operator Assisted Appointment Booking Service should be used to schedule the interview.

  3. Pay the SEVIS fee ($200) and submit information for the SEVIS database. SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System) tracks holders of student visas while they are residents of the United States.

  4. Complete the online visa application (form DS-160) and pay the visa application fee ($160).

  5. Gather additional documents. The most important of these are a current passport and form 1-20A-B. Applicants are also asked to provide a recent passport-quality photograph.

In preparation for the visa interview, an applicant may be asked to provide evidence of sufficient funds to cover all school and living expenses while in the United States and evidence of a personal or professional commitment to return to the United Kingdom at the conclusion of the academic program.

Visit the website of the U.S. Embassy in the United Kingdom for more information about the student visa process. The website for the Institute of International Education is another good resource for U.K. students who enroll in U.S. schools.
